Rainbow Light STEM Activity for Kids (Refraction with Lucite Cubes)

Introduction

Children are naturally drawn to color and light. This simple rainbow STEM activity uses translucent Lucite Cubes to introduce early science concepts like refraction, color mixing, and light exploration through hands-on play.

Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, this activity turns everyday sunlight into an engaging sensory and STEM learning experience.

Age Range

3–7 years (younger children can explore freely with supervision)

Skills Developed

  • Early physics concepts

  • Scientific observation

  • Color recognition and mixing

  • Sensory exploration

  • Creative problem-solving

Materials Needed

Optional:

  • Mirror

  • Clear container of water

  • White poster board for stronger reflections

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Set Up Your Light Source

Place your Lucite Cube in direct sunlight near a window, or shine a flashlight through the cube in a dim room.

Step 2: Observe the Refraction

Encourage your child to rotate and tilt the cube slowly. Watch how the light bends and creates rainbow reflections.

Ask:

  • “What happens when we turn it?”

  • “Why do the colors move?”

  • “What colors do you see?”

Step 3: Experiment with Color Mixing

Layer two or more colored cubes together and predict what new color will appear.

Try:

  • Red + Blue

  • Yellow + Blue

  • Red + Yellow

Let children test their predictions and compare results.

STEM Learning Concepts

Refraction

Light bends when it passes through transparent materials. Lucite Cubes act like small prisms, separating light into visible colors.

Color Theory

Layering translucent cubes demonstrates how light waves combine to create new colors.

Scientific Inquiry

Children observe, test, adjust, and draw conclusions — the foundation of early STEM learning.

Extend the Activity

  • Use a mirror, like our mirror tray to reflect light onto different surfaces

  • Create a “rainbow hunt” and photograph patterns

  • Trace rainbow reflections onto paper

  • Try the activity outdoors at different times of day

Why Light Play Matters

Light exploration encourages curiosity and observation. Sensory-based STEM activities help children build foundational scientific understanding in a playful, memorable way.

Open-ended toys like Lucite Cubes allow children to experiment freely, strengthening creativity while introducing real scientific concepts.
