About Open-Ended Play
From choosing the right toy to understanding the benefits of open-ended play, explore answers to our most frequently asked questions and discover why these timeless toys continue to inspire children year after year.
What is open-ended play?
Open-ended play gives children the freedom to explore, create, and imagine without rules or predetermined outcomes. Instead of telling children what to build or how to play, open-ended toys encourage them to think independently, solve problems, and create their own stories.
The same toy can become a castle one day, a city the next, or something entirely new—growing alongside your child's imagination.
What are your toys made from?
Our wooden collections are crafted primarily from premium solid beechwood, selected for its strength, durability, and beautiful natural grain. Some pieces are finished with child-safe, non-toxic, water-based paints or stains that allow the natural beauty of the wood to shine through.
Many collections also feature premium acrylic accents, hand-finished details, and carefully selected textiles to create rich, multi-sensory play experiences.
Are your toys safe?
Yes. Every Maison Rue product is independently tested to meet or exceed CPSIA and applicable international toy safety standards before it reaches your family.
Our products are tested for lead, phthalates, heavy metals, and other harmful substances, giving you peace of mind that every piece has been designed with your child's safety at its core.
Why do your wooden toys feel different from others?
We use solid beechwood and finish our toys with non-toxic, water-based stains rather than thick plastic coatings or heavy lacquers.
This allows the natural texture and grain of the wood to remain visible and tangible. You may notice subtle variations in color, grain, or texture—these are not imperfections but part of the unique character of real wood.
What makes them better quality?
We believe children's toys should be made to last.
Every Maison Rue collection is thoughtfully designed using premium materials, skilled craftsmanship, and rigorous independent safety testing. From precision woodworking and hand-finished details to fair wages and responsible manufacturing practices, every decision is made with quality and longevity in mind.
Rather than creating toys that are quickly outgrown or replaced, we create heirloom-quality pieces designed to inspire years of meaningful play and be passed down through generations.
What age are your toys suitable for?
Each product page includes the recommended age range for that specific collection.
Many of our toys begin supporting development from toddlerhood and continue to inspire increasingly complex play throughout the preschool and early school years, making them toys children return to again and again.
Will my child outgrow these toys?
Open-ended toys evolve alongside children's development.
A younger child may enjoy stacking, sorting, and balancing, while older children begin creating cities, storytelling scenes, architectural builds, marble runs, or imaginative worlds using the very same pieces.
As creativity grows, so do the possibilities.
Do your products work together?
Yes. Every Maison Rue product is intentionally designed to complement one another.
Whether you're starting with a single set or building a larger collection over time, our toys are designed to mix, match, and expand seamlessly—creating endless new opportunities for imaginative play.
Are variations in the wood normal?
Absolutely.
Wood is a natural material, meaning no two pieces are ever identical. Variations in grain, knots, texture, and color are a beautiful part of what makes every Maison Rue toy unique.
These natural characteristics do not affect the quality, safety, or durability of the product.
How do I care for my wooden toys?
Simply wipe clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
Avoid soaking, dishwashers, harsh cleaning products, or prolonged exposure to moisture, as these may damage the natural wood.
Are your toys Montessori?
Our collections are inspired by many child-led learning philosophies, including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf principles.
Rather than focusing on one educational approach, we design toys that encourage creativity, independence, problem-solving, and open-ended exploration—supporting children as they learn through play.
Why do you use muted paint colors on your wood instead of bright primary colors?
Our carefully curated palettes are intentionally designed to complement modern homes while allowing children's creativity—not the toy itself—to take center stage.
Soft, timeless colors encourage open-ended play without overwhelming the senses, creating toys that children love to play with and parents are happy to leave on display.
Are your toys sustainably made?
We believe quality is one of the most sustainable choices.
By creating timeless, durable toys from premium materials, we aim to reduce the cycle of disposable toys and encourage products that can be loved, passed down, and enjoyed for generations. We also work with manufacturing partners who prioritize responsible production practices and fair working conditions.
Do I need multiple sets to get started?
Not at all. Every Maison Rue product is thoughtfully designed to be enjoyed on its own while also integrating seamlessly with our wider range. Whether you begin with a single set or build your collection over time, each piece offers endless opportunities for creative, open-ended play.
Why do parents choose open-ended toys?
Open-ended toys invite children to become the creator rather than simply the player. Without fixed rules or one "right" way to play, children develop creativity, confidence, problem-solving skills, and independent thinking—returning to the same toys in new ways as they grow. It's this lasting versatility that makes open-ended toys a favorite among parents, educators, and designers alike.
